3 Mouse Entry Points I Find Over and Over Again in Stevensville Homes
by Scott Koscielniak, Associate Certified Entomologist
If you're hearing scratching in the walls or finding mouse droppings around your home, the first question usually isn't where the mice are hiding, it's how they're getting inside in the first place.
While inspecting homes in Stevensville and around Kent Island, there are a few mouse entry points I find over and over again.
Mice don't need a large opening to get inside they need just a quarter inch gap. That's why a good rodent inspection isn't just about setting traps or putting out bait. Finding and correcting the entry points is an important part of solving the actual problem.
Here are three areas I pay particularly close attention to.
1. HVAC and Utility Line Penetrations
One of the first places I check is anywhere a pipe, wire, refrigerant line, or other utility passes through the exterior of the home.
Installers have to create an opening to run these lines into the structure, and sometimes there's space left around them. Sealants can also deteriorate or pull away over time.
It doesn't always look like much from the outside, but mice don't need much room.
When I'm inspecting for rodents, I look closely around HVAC lines, plumbing penetrations, electrical lines, cable penetrations, and similar openings. If there's a gap, I want to know where it leads before simply sealing it.
2. Crawlspace Doors and Vents
Crawlspaces are another area where I regularly find potential rodent entry points.
Older crawlspace doors can warp, rot, or simply stop fitting tightly. Vents and screens can become damaged or develop gaps around the edges.
Once a mouse gets into the crawlspace, it may have access to plumbing and utility penetrations that lead farther into the home.
That's why I don't just look for obvious holes in the siding. During an inspection, the condition of the crawlspace access points and the areas around them can be just as important. Here you can see that the vent has a hole in the mesh big enough that a mouse could fit in.
3. Garage Door Weather Stripping
Garage doors are easy to overlook.
The weather stripping along the bottom and sides of a garage door takes a beating. Over time it can tear, shrink, become uneven, or leave a small gap at the corners.
Those corners are one of the places I like to check closely.
A garage also provides mice with exactly what they're looking for: shelter, relatively little disturbance, and often stored items they can hide behind. From there, additional openings may provide access to the rest of the structure.
If you can see daylight around portions of a closed garage door, it's worth taking a closer look.
Trapping Mice Is Only Part of the Solution
Catching the mice currently inside the home is important, but it doesn't necessarily explain how they got there.
That's why I approach rodent problems by looking at both sides of the issue: removing the existing rodent population and identifying potential entry points that can be corrected.
Every house is different, so there isn't one universal checklist that replaces actually inspecting the structure.
These are simply three areas that experience has taught me not to overlook.
